For the most common world gold bullion coins, the value fluctuates based on the real-time spot price of gold. This market price includes the coin’s intrinsic bullion value. Differences in price reflect the coin’s purity, liquidity, and any premium.
Most common 1-ounce world gold coins:
- Canadian Gold Maple Leaf: Made of 99.99% pure gold, its market value is typically slightly above the spot price of gold
- South African Gold Krugerrand: As one of the oldest bullion coins, it is widely recognized and contains 91.67% gold. It often trades at a competitive price relative to its gold content.
- American Gold Eagle: With 91.67% gold purity and backing by the U.S. government, this coin is a very popular and highly liquid investment.
- Australian Gold Kangaroo: Minted by the Perth Mint, this 99.99% pure gold coin features a new kangaroo design each year, which can attract both investors and collectors.
- Austrian Gold Philharmonic: This coin from the Austrian Mint is made of 99.99% pure gold and is the only bullion coin denominated in euros.
- American Gold Buffalo: The first 99.99% pure gold coin issued by the U.S. Mint, it is favored by those seeking the highest purity in a U.S. coin.
- Chinese Gold Panda: This 99.9% pure gold coin is distinctive for its yearly changing panda design, which appeals to collectors
- Mexican Libertad: Issued from the Mexican Mint, these brilliant uncirculated and proof coins are composed of .999 fine gold. Limited mintage often means these coins carry a premium over their bullion value.
Classic European gold coins (pre-1940s)
- British Sovereign: The iconic gold Sovereign is one of the most widely traded gold coins in the world. Containing just under a quarter-ounce of 22-karat gold, it was minted from 1817 until 1917 and intermittently since. Early versions feature the reigning monarch on the obverse and Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous St. George and the Dragon design on the reverse.
- French 20 Francs: These coins were minted from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s and are a popular and liquid form of gold. Popular varieties include:
- Napoleons (1852–1870)
- Roosters (1899–1914)
- Angels (1871–1898)
- Swiss 20 Francs (Helvetia): Produced between 1897 and 1936, this 20-Franc coin features the Swiss coat of arms and the national personification, Helvetia. Like other 20-Franc coins, it was minted in .900 fine gold and is valued for its distinct design and history.
- Austrian Ducats: The gold Ducat was a key trade coin in Europe from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century and is popular among collectors. The Austrian Mint has restruck the last series of single and four-ducat coins, with the 1915-dated restrikes being the most common.
- German 20 Marks: Issued by various German states from 1871–1915, these coins feature a portrait of the local monarch and the German eagle on the reverse. The Prussian issues featuring Kaiser Wilhelm II are among the most recognizable.
