PCGS Marks 40 Years as a Defining Force in Third-Party Coin Grading

On February 3, 2026, Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) reaches a milestone few numismatic institutions can claim. Forty years after opening its doors, PCGS stands as the longest-operating international third-party grading and encapsulation firm in numismatics.

Founded in 1986 and officially launching operations on February 3 of that year, PCGS helped establish a framework for authentication, grading consistency, and market confidence that continues to shape the modern coin hobby.

From a Mid-1980s Concept to an Industry Standard

According to PCGS, the company began as a book project among several coin dealers in the mid-1980s. That early effort soon evolved into a full-scale grading service, ushering in a new era for collectors and the marketplace.

Over the past four decades, PCGS reports having graded more than 60 million coins, banknotes, medals, and tokens, representing nearly $60 billion in cumulative value. Those figures reflect the company’s stated role in both the authentication process and the broader numismatic economy.

PCGS President Stephanie Sabin credits that growth to sustained investment and long-term commitment to the hobby.

“What began as a book project among a few enterprising coin dealers in the mid-1980s has turned into an industry-redefining juggernaut,” Sabin said. She added that the milestone reflects “decades of tireless innovation and investment from people who care about the hobby and the people who buy, sell, and enjoy coins, banknotes, and other numismatic treasures.”

Sabin, who has worked at PCGS for nearly two decades, also noted that she has personally witnessed many of the company’s innovations during her tenure.

Setting the Standard for Encapsulation and Registry Collecting

From its earliest days, PCGS positioned itself at the forefront of grading technology. The firm was the first international coin-grading company to encapsulate coins at scale using tamper-evident holders.

As the market matured, PCGS introduced enhancements that extended beyond grading itself. During the 1990s, the company refined its holder technology and later introduced the PCGS Set Registry, which moved online in 2001. PCGS describes the Registry as the first internet-based competitive collecting platform of its kind.

These developments helped reinforce consistent grading standards while fostering a new form of collector engagement.

Expanding Services and Technology in the 21st Century

During the 2000s and 2010s, PCGS expanded its offerings with several high-profile initiatives. These included PCGS TrueView imaging, PCGS CoinFacts, described by the company as the largest free and comprehensive numismatic encyclopedia online, and the PCGS mobile app.

In the 2020s, PCGS added further services and security measures. These included PCGS Banknote encapsulation, the introduction of Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology as an anticounterfeiting feature in its holders, and the launch of PCGS Ancients, which applies the firm’s established 10-point grading system to ancient coins.

PCGS states that it remains the only numismatic firm of its kind to implement NFC technology in holders.

A Presence at the Top of the Auction Market

Coins encapsulated by PCGS regularly appear among the highest-priced numismatic auction results each year. According to the company, PCGS-graded coins typically account for the majority of the top 25 auction prices realized annually.

One notable example occurred in 2021, when the 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, described as the world’s most valuable coin, sold for nearly $19 million after having been graded by PCGS.

Education, Community, and Collector Engagement

As the hobby continues to evolve, PCGS states that education remains a core focus. The company publishes informational articles daily, produces PCGS Insider magazine, and maintains an active presence across social media platforms.

PCGS also participates in coin shows through meet-and-greet events and public appearances, offering collectors direct access to its experts.

In addition, the PCGS Collectors Club has grown to more than 30,000 members, which PCGS identifies as the largest organization of numismatic collectors in the United States.

A Year-Long 40th Anniversary Celebration

To mark its 40th anniversary, PCGS plans a year-long celebration. The company is releasing a 40th Anniversary Special Label, along with anniversary-themed boxes, branded merchandise, and promotional giveaways.

PCGS has also announced special submission offers and exclusive promotions for PCGS Collectors Club members. Additional details are available through the company’s membership portal.
