American Numismatic Society Launches Campaign to Commemorate Semiquincentennial with New Medal
The American Numismatic Society (ANS) has announced a fundraising campaign to create a commemorative medal for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. If funded, the “Semiquincentennial,” a celebration of America’s founding, will be marked by a new medal designed by one of the finest contemporary sculptors.
The ANS, which has a long history of commissioning medals for significant events since 1866, is seeking to raise $40,000 to cover the initial costs of the project. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to facilitate donations, and the society has also received direct contributions. So far, the campaign has raised $5,005, surpassing the 20% mark of its goal.
The funds raised will be used to attract top artistic talent to design the medal. Peter van Alfen, the ANS’s Chief Curator, and a colleague are currently developing a list of artists to approach and a detailed specification for the medal. The ANS emphasizes that the amount they can offer for a design will significantly influence the caliber of artists they can attract.
Once the design is chosen, the medal will be struck in both bronze and silver and offered for sale to the public. The ANS is encouraging everyone to support this project, from coin collectors and historical societies to universities and individuals with an interest in American history and art.
“We are incredibly grateful for the support that has gotten us to this point,” wrote Alexander Krapf. “There is still much more to be done, and we ask everyone to help us spread the word. Every dollar helps, and who knows… maybe your outreach could be the beginning of someone else’s medallic… ‘passion.'”
The ANS is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the study and public appreciation of coins, currency, and other related objects. For more information on the project and to donate, visit the official GoFundMe page.
