NCIC Assists Law Enforcement in Identifying Theft Suspect
The Numismatic Crime Information Center (NCIC) has assisted the Naugatuck Police Department in identifying the subject pictured below in connection with a gold coin theft that occurred at the recent coin show in Naugatuck, Connecticut, on December 28, 2024.
NCIC has tracked the individual, who is known to target coin shows across the country, for several years and it is believed that the suspect is currently traveling the East Coast.
The subject, pictured below, is named Mircea Lucaci.
$6,000 in Gold Stolen from Florida Coin Shop
On Thursday, December 19, 2024, the three people pictured below entered a store in Winter Park, Florida and through apparent sleight of hand left with almost $6,000 in gold coins.
The stolen property includes:
- 14kt Gold Ring with Opal
- 1842 $5 Gold
- 1/4 oz US Gold Eagle
- Canada 1/4 Oz Gold
- Austria 2 Corona Gold set in 14kt Gold Bezel
- 2016 1/4 oz US Gold Eagle Slabbed, NGC
- 1995 Olympics $5 Gold PF70 NGC
- 2017 Boy’s Town $5 gold PF70 NG
Coin Shop Burglary in Ann Arbor, Michigan
Law enforcement is investigating a burglary that occurred at a southeastern coin shop (the victim wants to remain anonymous). Suspects gained entry into a bathroom window by prying off security screens and breaking the glass. The bathroom window was the only one without a sensor. Once inside, the suspect or suspects quickly shoveled American Silver Eagles, bulk 90% silver coins, 200-300 cull silver dollars. Additional items taken were assorted foreign coins such as modern copper-nickel Russian Roubles, Newfoundland small cents from the 1940s, aluminum Somali coins with animals on them, Peruvian brass sols, and common British farthings.
Unique items taken include about a dozen scarce silver medals of the United States Diplomatic Courier Service, 50th Anniversary, which are silver-dollar sized in blue plastic 3×5 holders.
